The photo is of my son, Ted, just about to jump his personal best in high jump... 1.88m. (He said, "Mom, I just started moving my arms to clap and people joined in! It was crazy!") With this jump, he won the Provincial High Jump event for Senior Boys last weekend.
It was a glorious day. But do you know what the best part was?
The camaraderie. Meeting the other athletes. Encouraging each other on.
The actual root of "competition" is from the Latin "competere". It means: "to strive together".
Have you ever won an award and you were the only one in the race?
Not as fun as competing against 10 others and winning, right?
We seem to have lost the meaning of competition and put the emphasis on winning for ourselves. But, "A rising tide lifts all boats". It's fun to be pushed by others. It's fun to see the efforts of others and have their results inspire you to be better. Together we rise.
Can you reframe any competition in your life to be one of gratitude for being in the race?
Not everyone is in the race... but you are.
